This is a really cool kit

Perfect gift for beginners

We all can't wait to taste the homemade sake!

Sake brewers

Great idea-koji is hard to get ordinarily unless you have access to Japanese grocery, and even then until recently could it be purchased

This is NOT sake, but still fun

Please note, this is NOT sake, this is moreso a watered-down wine. SAKE is made by converting the sugar in RICE to alcohol (through many, precise steps). WINE is made by converting the sugar in FRUIT (in this case, raisins plus additional sugar), to alcohol. Completely different ingredients and process. This is a fun kit nevertheless and makes a fruity alcohol drink, but resembles nothing even remotely close to sake. I've lived in Japan multiple times, certified in sake, and have brewed my own sake before.

Response from merchant

Thanks for reaching out, this is such great feedback! We'll be sure to pass this on to the artist.

Awesome Gift

This was a great gift for my brother who likes interesting gifts. The packaging was unique and he was really excited to open it to figure out what it was. He said the process was really cool and enjoyed making the actual sake. #sweepstakes

Have not tried yet, but...

Have not had the chance to try making the sake yet, but we are very excited to give it a try. The packaging is really cute. Made for a great gift. My husband is very excited. Doesn't need a lot of extras, just golden raisins and sugar.

This is not Sake

I received this as a gift as result of mentioning an interest in expanding beyond brewing mead, wine, and beer, and trying sake. However, after opening the kit and reviewing, I knew immediately that this does not make sake or rice wine. The fact that its called a sake kit is the only reason I am giving it 1 star. Explanation below. For those with only a passing curiosity about fermentation, this kit is likely still a lot of fun. I can't vouch for the end product yet as mine is still going. Taste test is pretty bad but without some aging, a lot of good brews taste acrid and yeasty. Its too early to judge. Now for those serious about brewing sake for the first time, look for kits that contain Koji spores. It is integral to converting the starch in steamed rice into sugars the yeast can use. This kit has no Koji and does does not even ask for the rice to be cooked. Because of this, the rice is pretty much only for show. The real players in this are soaked raisins and several pounds of table sugar. Bottom line, while I don't want crush this product, I do want budding home brewers to know what they are really getting with their purchase.

Perfect Gidt for Saki Lover

Very unique gift for a brewer

The idea itself was cool, but the packaging was also well done. He loves it.

Unique gift

My boyfriend loves sake and has mentioned brewing it himself a few times. I came across this kit later and put it on my wishlist for an anniversary gift. He hasn't started it yet, but is still doing a little research for the brewing process (raisins are not part of sake brewing). We love how the kit comes with everything you need and are excited for the final results!

Hi, I received this as a gift and have followed all instructions and am on the final waiting period (2 months). At the moment my sake is still very yellow, while I was expecting it to turn almost clear. Is this expected or did something go wrong?

Verified reply from Maxienne

The color is expected. Typical commercial sake goes through a number of filtrations that are designed to change color, flavor, and clarity to what someone might typically encounter. The type of raisin used can also influence the color. The settling of particulates over time will also affect the final color of the sake as well.

Are the ingredients kosher certified?

Verified reply from Maxienne

The ingredients are not Kosher certified.

I would like to reuse my kit. Where can I buy the ingredients for another round?

Verified reply from Amy

Hi Melissa! You can use the instructions as a guide for the ingredients as it has the type and quantities for the items but in short, you would need a cleanser, campden tablets, Acid Blend, Yeast Nutrient, white raisins and whatever rice you prefer to use! If you've lost the instructions, you can access them here: https://www.uncommongoods.com/pdf/25504.pdf

What is the milling percentage of the supplied rice? Where is the rice from? Thanks.

Verified reply from Melody

Thanks for your question! The rice is from the U.S. and has a 70% milling percentage.

Whats the ABV on average?

Verified reply from Valerie

The ABV will be approximately 14% to 18%.

i was wondering about the rice provided is it koji do i need to add spores? thank you for any information you may have

Verified reply from Paul

Thank you for your expert level question. We reached out to the manufacturer and the rice included is not koji. They did suggest that you could certainly use that type of rice if you preferred, although their included instructions would not take that into account. So if you're experienced with the recipe you can certainly customize it to your preference, but those details are not included in this kit.
