From a small gathering in Seneca Falls, New York, to the ratification of the 19th amendment, the Woman Suffrage Movement waged a 70-year battle to secure the most fundamental right of citizenship for half of the American population. While the 19th amendment by no means guaranteed every woman access to the ballot,* it stands as a testament to the power of movements and the brilliant determination of its members.
This game captures and celebrates the struggle by inviting players to join the suffrage movement, organize support, and campaign for victory across the 48 states that were called to ratify the 19th amendment in 1919–1920.
- The card-driven game includes over 100 cards with period art, portraiture, and historical documents (like New York Times articles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries).
- Play cooperatively, competitively, or in solitaire mode as you dig deeper into history and navigate the suffragists' critical choices to secure equal franchise and win.
- With every roll of the dice, campaigners move across the map to allocate political capital and sway state votes on the amendment's ratification or rejection throughout three gameplay eras.
- To win, the Suffragist player aims to pass the proposed amendment in Congress and secure ratification from three-fourths of the states (36 out of 48). The Opposition player wins by blocking the amendment in Congress or having 13 states reject it.
- Made in China.
*We would like to acknowledge that the 19th amendment only technically gave all female US citizens the right to vote. In reality, Indigenous and Black Americans of both genders were very often prevented from exercising that right for many decades afterward. Even now, the fight continues.
