I'd like to purchase this for my briefcase, which has three large compartments. Does it have a clip to attach near the top of a bag, so it'll illuminate all compartments?

There is no clip but you may find Velcro hanging strips to be pretty handy.

My daughter gave me this light for Christmas. It already has quit working. How do I open it to change the batteries. I am sure I didn't use it 6,000 times. But I don't want to break it opening it. I love the light in the bottom of my bag. Great idea but the batteries didn't last very long.

Two AAA batteries power the light, and can be easily replaced. There are two 1/2 discs that fit together. They are held together by four plastic prongs that extend from one of the half discs into corresponding slots on the other half disc. Place the illuminator in one palm of your hand, press together with your other palm and you should be able to get enough traction to rotate one disc in the opposite direction from the other (about 1/4 inch) which disengages the prongs. Open and replace batteries...good luck

The illuminator is 2.76" L x 2.76" W x 0.79" H. It weighs 1.55 lbs in its package, and 0.2 lbs on its own.

If they are motion activated, will it turn on just from the motion of the bag or does there have to be a hand near it

It's magic! Ok, it's not magic, but it's pretty cool: proximity sensors utilize energy fields from your hand to activate the light without any need for buttons or switches. Once activated, the light remains on for 10 seconds before turning off automatically. The sensors aren't triggered by the inanimate objects inside of your bag, just your hand!

Sadly I find the motion of the bag activates the light. It isn't magic. I wish it was just the touch of my hand but I find it very sensitive. I'm worried about it running out quickly.

Put the disc between the palms of your hand, apply some pressure and twist in two different directions, i.e., clockwise with one palm, counter-clockwise with the other, about 1/4 inch. This will disengage the prongs fitting into the slots inside the disc and you can then easily pull the two disc halves apart to access the batteries for replacement. To put back together, line up the prongs with the slots, put the discs together and palm them 1/4 inch the opposite direction to lock them in place.
