What Makes It Uncommon

keyboard_arrow_up

In the Victorian era, no fashionable drawing room was complete without a collection of carefully chosen houseplants. With dark-green leaves that seem to be hand-painted in rosy pink, the Coleus scutellarioides (a.k.a., dwarf coleus, or painted leaf) was one of the most popular indoor greens of the day. A lovely native of Southeast Asia, the painted leaf plant is traditionally believed to bring luck, peaceful thoughts, and love to any home, and this compact kit gives you everything you need to cultivate your very own from seed.

  • Kit comes with soil, seeds, and a glass planter with an oak lid that doubles as a pedestal.
  • Includes complete planting and care instructions.
  • The leaves' colors are visible early in the growing process and continually change as the plant matures.
  • Packaged for gifting in its own glass planter with a watercolor-printed label.
  • Made in Idaho.

Made from

soil, paper, seeds, oak, glass vessel

Measurements

5" Diam x 5" H

Care

1. Remove the bag of soil and seed 2. Open soil bag and fill to soil line. Seal soil bag and work water into soil with hands. Over sink, poke holes in base of bag and let water drain from the bag, squeezing out as much water as possible. Pour soil into the vessel and level 3. Place seeds on the soil surface allowing space between them. Gently push into the soil without fully submerging. 4. Lightly mist. 5. mini-greenhouse: Cut off both corners of a clear plastic bag and place loosely over the top of the vessel. Set in a warm area (75-80ºF / 24-27ºC) in bright indirect sunlight until seeds sprout (approximately 7-10 days) Optimum temperature is around 70ºF/21ºC. (cont'd)

Notes

6. Do not let soil dry out. Water soil to the consistency of a damp, not soggy, sponge. Note: Cooler temperatures often require less watering/warmer temperatures may require more. The clear glass vessel helps monitor watering. If too much water has pooled at the base of the vessel, gently support the seedling and pour off excess water. 7. When sprouts are about 2-3” tall remove plastic bag and place in a brightly lit location avoiding direct afternoon sun. Note: Too much light can fade the color intensity of the plant. Too little light the plant will become tall and less full (‘leggy’). 8. Once a month fertilize, at half strength, 8 weeks after seeds have sprouted. 9. Once plant is established, to create a more bushy look you can prune outer stems near new leaf growth to desired height.
