Fire can be an agent of destruction—or it can refine matter into an object of indelible beauty and strength. Inspired by this elemental truth, Susan Gilland has designed this remarkable bracelet, which is handcrafted by a Detroit nonprofit that employs survivors of abuse. Representing the endurance that comes through adversity, this cuff is a powerful way to remind anyone who’s “going through the fire” that they’ll come out stronger and more beautiful for it on the other side

  • Symbolic of the maker's homebase in Detroit, (a.k.a., the Motor City), each piece is crafted of copper salvaged from auto brake lines, then refined by fire, and hammered into a gleaming natural array of colors.
  • 2.75" dia. Adjustable.
  • Fire patina may fade slightly over time. Please do not wear in the shower or a pool, or expose to perfume, hair spray, etc.
  • Handmade in Detroit by survivors of abuse.

Susan Gilland has worn many hats in the nearly 10 years since she joined a Detroit nonprofit that works with survivors of abuse. When the founder stepped away from the organization in 2022, Susan became lead designer in her place. Her designs are crafted by women who are learning a skill and earning income while in recovery. As a survivor herself and an artist, Susan finds it inspiring to see other women heal by creating with their hands. "That is the main goal of our nonprofit," she explains.
