Whether your youngster is all about manga or they just love to draw and color, you could be raising a budding comic book genius. Join professional art instructor
Annie Monaghan for this hands-on live virtual class where junior artists will create their own comic book—and get to see it beautifully printed and bound, just like the real thing.
- Annie has years of experience teaching art to grade- and middle-schoolers and even started a graphic novel art club at her school. She’ll begin class by walking students through the materials in their comic book kit (see Comes with the class, below) and helping them brainstorm, with prompts like Think of a time you were really surprised, and Make up a creature who comes to overthrow a city.
- Once students have settled on an idea, they’ll develop their setting, storyline, and characters.
- The last 30 minutes of class will be dedicated to drawing, while Annie encourages the kids with questions and additional prompts.
- Students will have the chance to ask their own questions and share ideas throughout the drawing part of the class.
- There will be a show-and-tell (100% optional!) at the end of class, but participants won’t be expected to finish their comic books within the hour.
- When the comic book is complete, you’ll be able to send it off and see it come to life as a professionally bound edition of the artist’s original work—complete with an About the Author page.
Class length: 60 minutes.
Recommended for: Ages 8–12 (accompanied by a parent or guardian, see below for more information).
Comes with the class: Our
Create Your Own Comic Book Kit includes preformatted blank drawing pages, washable color markers, and a prepaid envelope for mailing their finished art to be turned into a real bound comic book.
