The Experience

keyboard_arrow_up

Family recipes aren’t just instructions—they’re heirlooms, passed down with love and seasoned with memories. In this unique and heartwarming painting class, you’ll transform these cherished treasures into works of art. Guided by artist and food and travel blogger Evan Stevens, you’ll master watercolor techniques while celebrating the power of food to connect us. Along the way, Evan will share inspiring tales of how his artwork preserves the magic of family gatherings and the dishes that make them unforgettable.

  • Your inspiration will be a photo of a favorite family dish (you can find and print your own or bring an inspired photo depicting the special dish you wish to paint).
  • You'll learn expert watercolor techniques, like graphite transfers, sketching, underpainting, shading, and color-mixing, as you create a beautiful piece of art that celebrates family traditions and special memories.
  • Evan will demonstrate how you can add a "secret family recipe" element by transcribing your family recipe onto the back of your painting once it’s finished.
Class length: 90 minutes.
We suggest: Skip a trip to the art supply store and add our Watercolor Paint Set to your gift of this class. It comes ready with 36 paint colors, 10 art brushes, and 8 pieces of watercolor paper in a zip-up pouch.

About

A lifelong Mainer and only child, Evan Stevens always used creativity to make his own fun. He worked many jobs before turning his artistic dreams into a full-time venture, employed everywhere from a local seafood restaurant to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. But eventually he used his love for painting, cooking, and making his friends happy to create his own greeting-card business. Now he's running the show himself and loving every minute of it.

For this class, you will need either the optional Watercolor Paint Kit, optional large 135 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper, a color photo of your special dish, a black-and-white photo of your dish printed on printer paper, 2-3 pencils, a rubber eraser, a fine-point black pen, a fine-tip white acrylic paint pen, paper towels, a cup of water, a hair dryer. If you did not receive or purchase the optional kit, you will also need a watercolor palette with 8-12 colors, a 135 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper, and at least 2 brushes (we recommend one large round 10-12 pt and one small round 4-6 pt).
