First published anonymously in 1818, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was the result of a challenge to write the best ghost story between herself, her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron. The Picture of Dorian Gray was first published in 1890, in a magazine whose editor, worried it was indecent, cut about five hundred words from it without informing its author, Oscar Wilde.
