Is this product appropriate for a 9 year old or is it too difficult?

There is no specific age range for this item presented. If the 9 year old is good with art & blending, we would say this would be perfect. If they have no experience with painting, we wouldn't advise.

What does "paint by shadow" mean?

Shadow painting is similar to paint by number. For this kit, an image of one of our National Parks is printed in gray-scale on the canvas. There is a paint key to follow, or, you can use your own interpretation!
