The Experience

You know chocolate and coffee go together lusciously, but do you know that there’s real science behind the perfection of this pairing? The dark delicacies have similar botanical origins and, thanks to nearly identical production methods, their flavor profiles are literally made for each other. In this live virtual experience, professional roasters and brewers James McCarthy and Julien Langevin will teach you to appreciate the subtleties of chocolate and coffee by tasting and appraising this classic combo the way the experts do.

  • Learn the side-by-side cupping technique that pros use to evaluate beans and brews—no coffee maker required.
  • Discover the ideal temperature (yep, there is one) for savoring chocolate at its most intensely flavorful.
  • Refine your palate by sampling the coffees and chocolates separately, and then noticing how their flavors change when paired.
  • Practice several rounds of tasting to identify subtle notes of fragrance, body, and flavor.
  • At the end of class, reveal the origin and profile of each sample to find out how closely your own appraisal matches the real thing.
Class length: 75 minutes
Comes with the class: Available only with this experience, our Chocolate & Coffee Tasting Kit includes three bars of single-origin, small-batch dark chocolate crafted in Brooklyn; three hand-selected coffees from around the world; and sampling cups, tasting forms, and a detailed flavor wheel. To ensure you receive the freshest chocolate and coffee, we’ll ship the kit to arrive one week before your scheduled class date.

Julien Langevin & James McCarthy

About

Julien Langevin's fascination with coffee began with a college job in a café and eventually led to the world of professional coffee roasting and competitive coffee tasting. Realizing the value of years of knowledge, Julien created their own coffee education platform and began teaching classes. "I love seeing people get excited about coffee," they say, "Because I'm so excited about it!" Julien acknowledges that coffee tasting can feel intimidating for people who aren't in the industry, and they aim to break down those barriers and make coffee tasting approachable and fun. Like Julien, James McCarthy began his coffee journey as a barista. His café roasted their own beans and the process intrigued James so much that within a few months he became an apprentice roaster. James has worked in specialty coffee for nearly 20 years and has added teaching to his resumé. "Coffee is an easy way to bring people joy," he says. "I want everyone to understand and enjoy it more whether they turn into a 'coffee geek' or not!"

For this class, you'll need the included Chocolate and Coffee Tasting Kit, a kitchen scale (or measuring spoons), a 1.2-liter kettle or pot, 2 mugs, paper towels, 2 spoons, and a pen or pencil for notes.
